My term as 25th AKPA presidency comes to an end at the end of April.  Prof. Ho Jung Paik of University of Maryland will start his term of the AKPA 26th presidency on May 1, 2005 to end on April 30, 2007. AKPA will further prosper under his able leadership. 

 

I must thank all of the AKPA officers, particularly to Drs., Hoydoo You, Jeong-Sun Moon, and Hyun Yim, for taking care of the administrative matters such as web page, Newletter distribution, and setting up the web voting for the AKPA election. I thank also members of AKPA committees, especially OYRA committee leading by Prof. Kyungsik Kang.  I must thank also thank Dr. Sungkwun Lyo, the 23rd AKPA president for his constant support and guidance.

 

 The financial report for the term, May 1, 2003 - April 30, 2005 will be emailed to the paid members in the near future.

1. 2005 AKPA Election

 

Prof. Taeil Bai of Stanford University was elected as the 27th AKPA President in the Web election carried out in March. His term starts from May 1, 2007 and ends on April 30, 2009.  Prof. Yoonseok Lee, University of Florida, was elected as the Auditor.  His term starts on May 1, 2005 and ends on April 30, 2007.

2. AKPA General Meeting and Traditional Dinner in Los Angeles, California

 

The AKPA General Meeting and the Traditional Annual Dinner Meeting was held  on March 23 at the Secret Garden Buffet Land, L.A. during the March APS meeting.  The Outstanding Young Researcher Award (OYRA) for 2005 was presented to Dr. Inseok Song of Gemini Laboratory for his outstanding contribution to the systematic search for extra-solar planets with the Hubble Space Telescope.  Honorable mention of the OYRA was awarded to Dr. Seok-Hwan Chung, Argonne National Lab for outstanding contributions to the filed of frontier nano-science.

 

AKPA presented Dr. Kyungsik Kang of brown University a plaque for his contribution to promoting the joint collaboration between AKPA and the Korean Physical Society (KPS) for the occasion of the KPS jubilee meeting in 2002. Dr. Kang’s summary report of the AKPA participation of the KPS jubilee is included in section 5 in this newsletter.

 

3. AKPA Membership Dues and Contributions

 

The AKPA activities rely entirely on the regular membership ($25) and the associate membership ($5) (graduate students). A donation of any amount will also be appreciated.  As usual the available fund of the AKPA activities is limited.

 

Your contribution would be greatly appreciated for the AKPA revitalization.

 

4. Traditional APS March Wednesday Dinner Meeting

The Traditional APS March Wednesday Dinner Meeting was successfully held at "Secrete Garden Buffet Land" in Los Angeles, California at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, March 23, 2005, and followed by the Association of Korean Physicists in America (AKPA) General Meeting at 8:30 pm. This dinner meeting has been held every year for the last three decades, and was organized by the Dinner Meeting Organizing Committee of the Condensed Matter Physics Group. This year’s dinner meeting was sponsored by the AKPA (Dr. Quiesup Kim), Dr. Jin Joo Song, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics America, Inc. (Dr. In-Seop Jeong). All the members of the Condensed Matter Physics Group extend their gratitude to the generous support.

 

About eighty people attended this dinner meeting. The number of physicists and engineers from Korea was 21 and from America was 30, and the number of graduate students from Korea was 13 and from America was 6. During this historical annual dinner meeting, we all shared our mutual fellowship and exchanged technical and other information. In particular, job opportunity information for young physicists and engineers was shared by many Korean and American companies, institutions, and universities.

 

At this dinner meeting, Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA) Award 2004 in the category of High Technology and Entrepreneurship was awarded to Dr. William Tongil Chu, Senior Scientist, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (retired) by Drs. Quiesup Kim and Ki-Hyon Kim. Also, Dr. Ki-Hyon Kim shared his experience of official visit to Kim Ilsung University and Kim Chaek Institute of Technology, Pyongyang, Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK, North Korea) with the dinner participants. Both Dr. Chu and Prof. Kim are ex-presidents of AKPA.

 

The traditional APS March Wednesday Dinner Meeting for the year 2006 will be held in Baltimore, Maryland on Wednesday, March 15, 2006. The name of place will be announced through the AKPA news channel as soon as the place is determined. We hope to see each other again at the dinner meeting of 2006.

5. Report on the AKPA-KPS Joint Symposium

As a part of the celebration of the World Year of Physics for the centennial of Einstein's miracle year, 1905, a AKPA-KPS Joint Symposium was prepared and successfully completed on Thursday, Aril 21, 2005 during the Korean Physical Society Annual Spring Conference from April 21 to April 23, 2005 at the Ewha University, Seoul, Korea.  

 

General Assembly, United Nations, recognizing that physics provides a significant basis for the development of the understanding of nature, noting that physics and its applications are the basis of many of today’s technical advances, convinced that education in physics provides men and women with the tools to build the scientific infrastructure essential for development, being aware that the year 2005 is the centenary of seminal scientific discoveries by Albert Einstein which are the basis of Modern Physics, welcomes the proclamation of 2005 as the International Year of Physics by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization; invites the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to organize activities celebrating 2005 as the international Year of Physics, collaborating with physics societies and groups throughout the world, including in the developing countries; declares the year 2005 the international Year of Physics.

 

The Committee members, of the AKPA for the Joint Symposium, Prof. Kyungsik Kang, Dr. Sung Mook Lee, Prof. Young Wook Kim, prof. Ho Jung Paik, and Dr. Gey-Hong Gweon, leaded by Co-chair, Prof. Kyungsik Kang, Brown University, had been cooperated with Co-chair, Prof. Sung-Won Kim, Ewha University, from KPS, and prepared for the needed fund from KUSCO and KPS so that the participation of the physicists from AKPA was possible. This meeting brought together leading Korean physicists in the United States and Korea, and promoted closer scientific collaboration between them.  The AKPA-KPS Joint Symposium raised awareness of the importance of fundamental science among the Korean public and policy makers, and helped to improve science education and research both in Korea and USA.  The AKPA members participated to this historic meeting in order to communicate good works they have been doing, and to celebrate Einstein are following: Dr. Dae-Il Dale Choi, Goddard Space Flight Center, Dr. Yanglai Choi, Argonne National Lab, Prof. Herbert M. Fried, Brown University, Prof. Cheung-Ryong Ji, North Carolina State Univ., Prof. Philip Kim, Colombia Univ., Dr. Quiesup Kim, Jet Propulsion Lab./NASA, Caltech, Prof. Yong W. Kim, Lehigh University, Prof. Lillian McDermott, Univ. of Washington, Dr. S. K Lyo, Sandia National Lab., and Prof. Ho Jung Paik, Univ. of Maryland.

AKPA appreciates to KUSCO and KPS for their support and Profs. Kungsik Kang, Ho Jung Paik, Sung-Won Kim, and Chae-Ok Kim, KPS President, for their dedicated services so that this Joint Symposium was successfully completed.
