Greetings to all of you from Chicago! Winter is approaching fast here in mid-west.  I hope all of you have done everything that has to be done and may be even a little more.  Above all, I wish that you are happy and ready for the winter.

 

This newsletter contains two important announcements, the OYRA award and AK PA membership dues and contributions, and a summary of the AKPA participation of the KPS jubilee meeting.  I am looking forward to your eager responses to the announcements.

1.  Announcement of Outstanding Young Researcher Award (OYRA)

 

The purpose of this award is to recognize and promote excellence in research

by outstanding young ethnic Korean physicists in North America who are working

at research-doctorate institutions, and industrial and government laboratories.

 

QUALIFICATION and NOMINATION: Candidates are limited to those who

Received their doctoral degree after January 1, 1998, and are to be nominated by the

Chair or Head of the Department where they are employed or by the candidate's former thesis advisor in a letter detailing the importance and impact of the candidate's work. Supporting documents should include the candidate's curriculum vitae and three letters of recommendation.

 

DEADLINE: December 20, 2002 for nomination and December 31, 2002 for supporting documents.  The awardee will be selected by the Awards Committee consisting of

PRESENTATION:  The award in the amount of $1,000 will be presented at the AKPA annual meeting to be held in Indianapolis, IN during March 3 -7, 2003.

2.  AKPA Membership Dues and Contributions

 

AKPA relies on your membership dues and donations.

The basic membership fee is $25 for regular members and $5 for graduate students. It has been an AKPA tradition that many senior members contributed large donations.

3.   AKPA Participation to KPS Jubilee Meeting

 

About fifteen members of AKPA participated in the 50th anniversary meeting of the Korean Physical Society (KPS), held at Hanyang University in Seoul, on October 24-26, 2002. It was an important and memorable event for physicists with Korean roots, considering the history of the KPS, which grew from a circle of some thirty physicists in a war-torn country fifty years ago to a society with more than 7000 members producing about 2000 research papers. The AKPA participants presented invited lectures at symposiums organized by KPS topical divisions and attended various ceremonies and receptions.

 

The large-scale AKPA participation was made possible by a travel grant from KUSCO, support from the KPS, and by tireless work of Professor Kyungsik Kang of Brown University.  Professor Kang secured the KUSCO funding and made all arrangements with the KPS on behalf of AKPA.  We thank him sincerely for the effort.
