Dear AKPA members.

We are approaching the end of 2001 already. May your hearts be filled with happy memories and gratitude as we enter the holiday season looking forward to 2002. I sincerely hope that this letter find you in good health and well being. I am grateful to each of you for your encouragement and support. The ballot was counted in the presence of witnesses. My heart was touched when we opened the envelops filled with membership contributions from many of the voters and also with very generous donations. The Charter amendments have been approved by an overwhelming majority of the voters. I hope that this will help future officers improve AKPA significantly and more efficiently. The new charter is beneficial only if we unite together to elect conscientious people as our leaders. Our Web rebuilding job is making progress steadily. I thank you for your patience. I wish you a happy Thanksgiving.

1. Amendment Approved for the AKPA Charter

The amendment for the AKPA Charter and by-laws has been approved in the recent election according to Chapter 7 of the AKPA Charter. The summary of the ballot is as follows:

1. Article 8 chapter 2 of AKPA charter:

Change "The membership fee for associate members is waved."

to "The membership fee for associate members will be determined

in the same manner as the membership fee of regular members."

A fee of $5.00 for associate members will be charged effective immediately.

For ( 88% ) Against ( 4% ) Abstain ( 8% )

2. Article 10 chapter 3 of AKPA charter:

Change the terms of the president, vice president, auditor, and other

appointed officers from one year to two years from the term starting

on May1, 2003.

For ( 72% ) Against ( 16% ) Abstain ( 12% )

3. Add to chapter 7 of AKPA charter (by-laws):

Anonymous secure Web voting can replace regular mail-in

voting at the discretion of the president. (Effective immediately.)

2. Announcement of Outstanding Young Researcher Award (OYRA)

The purpose of this award is to recognize and promote excellence in research

by outstanding young ethnic Korean physicists in North America who are working

at research-doctorate institutions, and industrial and government laboratories.

QUALIFICATION and NOMINATION: Candidates are limited to those who received

their doctoral degree after January 1, 1997, and are to be nominated by the

Chair or Head of the Department where they are employed or by the candidate's

former thesis advisor in a letter detailing the importance and impact of the

candidate's work. Supporting documents should include the candidate's

curriculum vitae and three letters of recommendation.

DEADLINE: December 15, 2001 for nomination and December 31, 2001 for

supporting documents. The awardee will be selected by the Awards Committee

4. 50th Anniversary of the Korean Physical Society

We rely on Korean physicists for this section. We appreciate receiving any newsworthy item from you in Korea.

Korean Physical Soc(KPS) will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. The ceremony/general meeting will be held on October 24-26, 2002 at Han Yang Univ. Professor Sook-Il Kwun of SNU (Former cabinet Minister of Science and Technology) is the Chairman of Promotion Committee and would like to invite many AKPA members to attend the event. We strongly encourage AKPA members to share this joyous occasion with KPS friends. Please contact AKPA officers for your ideas.

6. Member News: Dr. Kim of HDRI receives prestigious awards

The Minnesota High Tech Association and Minnesota Technology, Inc., joined together to recognize innovation, development, commercialization, and management of technology in Minnesota. The TekneAwards 2001 recipients were honored on October 25th, 2001 at the Historic Orpheum Theatre, in Minneapolis. About one thousand people attended the event. The TekneAwards 2001 recipients represent technology innovators who have made lasting contributions to enhancing the quality of life and competitiveness of Minnesota. Dr. Young Hwa Kim (CEO of High Dimension Research Inc. and AKPA member) was recognized for his company's innovating invention and advanced manufacturing technology of SuperFabric?brand material that can be custom-engineered to deliver specific performance, such as extra protection, cut and puncture resistance, abrasion resistance, gripping power and water and air permeability. It can be incorporated into a wide range of protective apparel, ranging from medical gloves, extreme sports apparels for such as hunting, scuba diving, skiing, rock climbing, fishing, industrial protective apparel, aprons for meat/poultry/fish processing, military combat uniforms for bio-chemical warfare, protective fabric for law-enforcement personnel, and other special fabrics. Dr. Kim received his BS in engineering from Korean Military Academy in 1963, a BS in physics from SNU in 1967, Ph. D. from UCLA in theoretical polymer physics in 1980. He worked at 3M Central Research Laboratory from 1982 to 1992 after his post-doctoral work at the University of Illinois (Urbana Champaign 1980- 82). He founded HDRI in 1992, and its subsidiary, HDM Inc., in 1996. The company has 50 employees (including 7 Ph. D.'s). It is expected that annual sales of SuperFabric?brand as raw materials for variety of applications will reach several hundred million dollars in 3 ~ 5 years.

8.1 Postdoctoral research position in experimental condensed matter physics

Laboratories to study low temperature quantum transport phenomena of 2D

electron systems and nanoscale devices. Specific interests include

coupled quantum wires, bilayer electron-hole systems and novel device

applications. State-of-the-art facilities are available at Sandia for

materials growth, fabrication and measurements. The successful candidate

should have a recent Ph.D. in condensed matter physics or applied

physics. Experience with low temperature techniques and/or transport

measurements is desirable. This position is available immediately, and

8.2 POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS

(US citizenship or permanent residency is preferred, but not required.)

The Department of Engineering Physics at the Air Force Institute of

Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position at the Air Force

Institute of Technology in Experimental semiconductor physics. The research

associate must have doctoral degree in physics, materials science, or

electrical engineering. The successful candidate will perform electrical and

optical characterization of group-III nitrides such as GaN and AlGaN, and

SiC using Hall effect, deep level transient spectroscopy, and

photoluminescence measurement techniques. A background in wide bandgap

semiconductors and their electrical and optical characterization techniques

are therefore desirable. This research program will contribute to an

existing Air Force effort to develop wide bandgap semiconductor materials.

Opportunities will be provided for interaction with Air Force Research

Laboratory scientists at Wright-Patterson AFB. Selection of candidates will

be based on demonstrated creativity, intellectual strength, and experience.

US citizenship or permanent residency is preferred, but not required. The

appointment will be for a period of one year with a possible extension for

additional years. The starting date is flexible. Interested applicants

looking for YOU! (Position will be available in November 2001)

The Air Force Research Laboratory, Space Vehicles Directorate, Space-Based

Infrared Technology Branch, Advanced Detectors Research Group in Albuquerque,

NM has an opening for an experimentalist with a physics or electrical

engineering background. The group presently is composed of eight researchers

and three laboratories, and performs research in quantum well heterostructure

devices (mainly detectors, but also structures that may aid in the detection

process). Our future plans are to begin research in areas such as quantum

wires, quantum dots, organic polymers, and nanotube structures, all as they

relate to possible space-based detector applications. The candidate must be

a U.S. citizen and should have considerable experimental background in and

knowledge of one or more of the following topics: opto-electronic

semiconductor devices, infrared sensing, solid state physics, and/or

semiconductor heterostructure physics. Significant ability to devise and

perform experiments relating to the optical and electrical characterization

of semiconductor devices is important, and experience in high vacuum,

cryogenic, and/or radiation environments is useful. A Ph.D. in Physics or

Electrical Engineering is preferred, however years of experience will also
